Email encodes attachments as text, which makes them about 37% larger. This tool makes an MP4 of 14 MB or less, which stays under the 20 MB message limit of iCloud Mail even after encoding. Nothing is uploaded. Your file never leaves your device.
Upload limits
| What | Limit | Plan | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Message size Incoming and outgoing messages. With Mail Drop turned on, attachments up to 5GB are sent as a download link. | up to 20 MB | Free | Official source |
| Email size (text and attachments) Whole email: all text, inserted and attached files. OneDrive links do not count (linked files up to 2GB). | up to 25 MB | Free | Official source |
| Outgoing attachments (total) Outgoing email, total of attachments, up to 100 files. Incoming limit is 50 MB. Proton notes that encoding makes attached files a bit larger than on your device. | up to 25 MB | — | Official source |
| Email attachments (total) Total of all attachments in one email, personal accounts. Above the limit Gmail replaces the attachment with a Google Drive link. Work and school limits are set by the administrator. | up to 25 MB | Free | Official source |
| Email attachments (total) Sum of all attachments in one message, incoming and outgoing. | up to 25 MB | Free | Official source |
How it works
- Choose a video — or drop it on the tool. It is opened in your browser, not uploaded.
- The tool reads its length and resolution and calculates the bitrate that fits the target.
- It re-encodes the video on your device and lowers the resolution only if needed.
- If the result is over the limit, it runs another pass. Download the file that fits.
Didn’t fit? What to do
- Trim the video: a 1-minute clip at 14 MB keeps far more detail than a 5-minute one.
- Send a link instead: Gmail switches to Google Drive above 25 MB, Outlook.com links OneDrive files up to 2 GB, iCloud Mail uses Mail Drop up to 5 GB.
- Attach one video per email: limits count all attachments in a message together.
- If the email still bounces, compress to 10 MB: the recipient's mail service may have a lower limit than yours.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum video size for email?
iCloud Mail: 20 MB per message. Outlook.com: 25 MB for the whole email, text included. Proton Mail: 25 MB of attachments outgoing. Gmail and Yahoo Mail: 25 MB of attached files.
Why 14 MB and not 20 or 25 MB?
Email sends attachments as base64 text: every 3 bytes become 4 characters, plus line breaks, about 37% more. A 14 MB file still fits under a 20 MB limit once encoded, with room left for the text. Proton notes this effect too: encoding makes attached files a bit larger.
Can I email a long video?
Only at low quality: 14 MB holds a few minutes at most in watchable quality. For longer videos, share a cloud link instead.
